born in Quebec City, Canada, to an Korean mother and a French-Russian father
who was working as a consul there for the French government. Eugene
Klementieff, a painter was her grandpa. Her parents chose the name
"Pom" due to the fact that it's similar in pronunciation to the
Korean words for "spring" and "tiger". Klementieff lived
for a year in Canada prior to moving her family frequently due to her father's
job. Prior to moving to France, they lived in Japan as well as on the Ivory
Coast. Klementieff's father died of cancer when she was just 5 and her mother
was suffering from schizophrenia and was unable to care for children, so
Klementieff was cared for by her aunt and uncle who were paternal. Her uncle,
who she described as "like her father", died at the age of 18 and her
brother, who was older, was killed just seven years after, but this time on her
25th birthday. Klementieff had the opportunity to pursue law school after the
passing of her uncle, but she was not able to find this career path appealing.
In France she was employed as a waitresse and salesperson. She began acting at
age 19 at the Cours Florent drama school in Paris. In the early stages of her
education, she won an award for theater that granted her free classes for two
years at the school's most prestigious teachers. Klementieff was the first
person to perform professionally in the independent French film Apres lui
(2007). She played the step-daughter of the protagonist, Catherine Deneuve.
Three days were spent filming her scenes. In one scene, Klementieff was
supposed to push someone down a flight of stairs but she fell her way down the
stairs, as did director Gael Morel recorded that scene in the film. Her first
leading role was in Loup (2009) the French film about a tribe of reindeer
herders located in the Siberian mountains. The filming took place in a camping
area, which was hours away from the nearest village where temperatures dropped
below zero
