Rachel Emily Nichols was born in Augusta, Maine, the daughter of Alison and James Nichols, a schoolteacher. Nichols is French Canadian and English descent. Cony High School was her high school in Augusta. She graduated there with a math diploma as well as a competitive high jump. She went to Columbia University in New York City, where she eventually graduated with a double major in math and economics. Following her modeling career after graduation, she began a successful career with high-profile companies such as Guess?, Abercrombie & Fitch, and L'Oreal. Rachel was able to transition into acting after being offered a role on the HBO comedy Sex and the City (1998).
